Eliza - About Me

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a process of exploring, understanding, and resolving your psychological and emotional issues. Psychotherapy can help you cope with stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, anger, and other mental health problems. Psychotherapy can also help you improve your self-esteem, confidence, communication, and relationships.

Psychotherapy is also known as talk therapy, counseling, psychosocial therapy or, simply, therapy. During psychotherapy, you work with a trained psychotherapist who listens to you, supports you, and guides you through the process of change. Psychotherapy can be done individually, as a couple, as a family, or as a group.

There are many types of psychotherapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT), psychodynamic therapy, humanistic therapy, and integrative therapy. Each type of psychotherapy has its own theory, techniques, and goals. The type of psychotherapy that is right for you depends on your situation, preferences, and needs.

How does psychotherapy differ from other types of coaching and counseling?

Psychotherapy is different from other types of coaching and counseling in several ways. Here are some of the main differences:

Psychotherapy is more regulated and standardized than other types of coaching and counseling. Psychotherapists are required to have a master’s degree or higher in psychology or a related field, as well as a license or certification from a professional body. Psychotherapists also follow ethical codes and standards of practice that ensure quality and safety for their clients.

What are the benefits of psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy can have many benefits for your mental health and well-being. Some of the benefits are:

  • Psychotherapy can help you reduce your distress and improve your mood. Psychotherapy can help you manage your emotions, challenge negative thoughts, cope with difficult situations, and develop positive habits. Psychotherapy can also help you prevent or treat mental disorders such as depression or anxiety.
  • Psychotherapy can help you enhance your self-awareness and self-acceptance. Psychotherapy can help you discover your strengths, values, passions, and purpose in life. Psychotherapy can also help you accept yourself as you are, without judgment or criticism. Psychotherapy can also help you overcome any self-doubt, guilt, shame, or insecurity that may be holding you back.

Psychotherapy can help you improve your relationships and social skills. Psychotherapy can help you communicate better, resolve conflicts, build trust, and deepen intimacy. Psychotherapy can also help you cope with relationship issues such as infidelity, divorce, separation, co-parenting, blended families, or domestic violence. Psychotherapy can also help you attract and maintain healthy and fulfilling relationships.

Benefits of Psychotherapy

How to get started with psychotherapy?

If you are interested in trying psychotherapy, the first step is to find a qualified and suitable psychotherapist for you. You can get a referral from your doctor, insurance company, friend, or another trusted source. You can also use online directories or platforms to search for psychotherapists near you or online.

The next step is to contact the psychotherapist and schedule an initial consultation. This is an opportunity for you and the psychotherapist to get to know each other and see if you are a good fit. You can ask the psychotherapist about their background, experience, approach, fees, availability, and expectations. You can also share your reasons for seeking psychotherapy and your goals for the process.

The final step is to start your psychotherapy sessions and commit to the process. Psychotherapy requires trust, honesty, openness, and willingness to change. Psychotherapy may not be easy or comfortable at times, but it can be rewarding and transformative. Psychotherapy can help you achieve the change and growth you desire in your life.
