Life coaches help individuals in improving their relationships, careers, personal development, day-to-day lives, and even financial wellness. But because each human being is different, so will their goals. A life coach is a type of wellness professional who helps people make progress in their lives in order to attain greater fulfillment. People need support to thrive in life and that’s what life coaches are for. Life coaches can help you clarify your goals, identify your limiting beliefs, figure out the root cause of your limiting beliefs, and then come up with various strategies for overcoming each obstacle.
Let’s say you are a working mom and you are getting overwhelmed by work and family. When you are with family you blame yourself for not using some of this time to finish some extra work, you blame yourself for not spending enough quality time with your family. Here, you start questioning work-life balance! Am I doing enough? Am I neglecting my kids? Will I be able to meet my deadlines at work? Is this job what I am meant to do for the rest of my life?
Clearly we are witnessing a lot of confusion happening here in this scenario. In most cases, people know that they have a problem like in this case (work/life balance), but they do not know what to do about it in order to make their life different.
The first session is about you, your wants, and your needs. To achieve this, the coach should structure the first session around developing a connection with their coachee. The coach’s goal is to help you feel relaxed and comfortable and help you get in touch with who you really are. The coach will brief you and explain to you what to expect going forward such as the coaching process and how it works.
Expect your life coach to ask various types of questions about your goals, dreams, problems in your life, and more!
Questions asked by the life coach will be a combination of both open-ended questions and close-ended (YES/NO questions). Open-ended questions are key in the coaching process as they do not set specific options for response. It also gives room to the coachee to express themselves freely and creatively from various perspectives. Your responses to some of the asked questions might end up surprising you.
During the first session, expect to be asked many questions about your current situation and future plans. A well trained life coach will respect you, support you, and offer you advice ONLY if you ask for it. A life coach will never force you into anything that you don’t want to do.
YOU ARE THE FINAL DECISION MAKER.
Expect to receive solutions/tools that work for you such as reflective journaling exercises and other personalized exercises that are personally designed for you and your goals. Most importantly, before deciding to make this step and pursue coaching, you must be aware that this process requires commitment. It’s collaborative work between you and the coach. It takes two to tango and so is coaching. The coach will pave the way for you, but you are the one who needs to do what it takes to achieve your goals.
Don’t expect to solve all your life problems just by visiting a life coach.
Coaching is all about addressing underlying challenges and exploring new possibilities and pathways. The key is to keep an open mind and communicate as honestly as possible. A life coach helps you discover your priorities, and what needs to be changed in your life to get you to your desired goal. It’s a golden opportunity for a breakthrough, a new way of seeing things, and a path forward.
